IBM (student placement)
I redesigning and managed a, SQL database of PC components sourced from countries around the world, showing exchange rates and real price per batch on a real-time, allowing IBM to track component costs day-to-day.

Quality Engineer
Cameron Iron Works
In this role I designed, scheduled, conducted and analysed the results of designed experiments on the production process for forged superalloy turbine hubs. This is involved liaising with management, engineers, metallurgists and operators on a daily basis, attempting to reconcile conflict and incorporate their diverse opinions into testable process factors.

Analysis of experimental data required my active involvement laboratory testing via X-Ray, ultrasound, acid etch and other inspection and testing methods.
I later moved to a sales engineering role which involved a visit to clients in India.

I began as a lecturer in 1990, teaching quality management, statistics and I.T. to students of consumer studies and trading standards. Following a successful early publishing record I was promoted in 2001 to Senior Lecturer in Operations Management, at which point I headed up the Operations Management teaching group at Glasgow Caledonian University.
I led the departmental quality group and led my department through a QA audit.
This role involved: educational course design, development, delivery, assessment and review; research student project supervision; and participation in the normal academic boards and committees.

Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and full Professor of Quality Systems

Seeking a new challenge and change of scene, I took up a Senior Lectureship at Massey University, where my role involved heading up the suite of Postgraduate distance-based courses in Quality Management, and teaching experimental design and process optimisation methods to engineers and food technology students.

I developed the existing graduate diploma in Quality Management into a suite of Postgraduate Diploma and Masters courses.
I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011 and to full Professor in 2015, and during this ten year period I led the Engineering and Innovation Management academic group as Cluster Leader.
During this time I taught into Massey University's MBA programme, delivering modules of logistics and supply chain management. I brought in significant external funding (see projects section) and supervised 19 doctoral projects and around 20 Masters projects to completion (see 'projects' and 'teaching' sections). I taught into Massey's joint course in Singapore from 2009-2022, teaching in Singapore for 4-6 weeks of every year excepting 2020 the lockdown year.
Following the COVID lockdowns and resulting loss of international students, Massey University went into a restructuring and cost saving drive, and I helped manage this within my academic group, finally requesting early separation myself to enable me to work on other projects and interests, such as writing.

Managing Director, SIPOC Improvement Ltd.
In 2009 I set up a consulting and business advisotry company, SIPOC Improvement Ltd. This allowed me to undertake additional paying roles and at points I reduced my contracted hours at Massey in order to provide consulting and business services advice. I could also channel payments from external examining and overseas work through this business.

I wound down the business in 2024 because I am currently based full-time in Thailand and do not require the formal business entity any longer.

Member of New Zealand reference committee group for Technical Committee (TC)176 which develops and manages ISO 9001
In this voluntary role I help provide feedback and advice to ISO Technical Committee 176 towards the on-going development of ISO 9001 and related standards and guidance documents.

Director, President and Board Chair,
The New Zealand Organisation for Quality.
The New Zealand Organisation for Quality (NZOQ) is a non-profit professional orgaisation for quality management professionals in New Zealand. It provides membership, training courses and consulting. I began as an elected Director in 2008 and was appointed as Vice Prsident in 2010, and President in 2012, a role which I maintained for 2 years until 2014. In this role I represented NZOQ on the international stage and chaired the Board, leading the annual AGM and strategic planning exercises.
2009 - 2022
Annual short-term Secondment to Massey Global Singapore Ltd
Between 2009 and 2022 I taught into Massey University's joint Bachelor of Food Technology programmes in Singapore. The partnership was initially with Singapore Polytechnic, and later with Singapore Institute of Technology. According to employment laws, I was seconded to Massey's private company through which I was able to obtain work visas for Singapore. This teaching involved 4-6 weeks annual work in Singapore, apart from during and post-lockdown when teaching was on-line. .
2014 - 2021
Associate Editor,
Total Quality Management & Business Excellence,
(A Routledge International Journal, based in Denmark).
After working for many years as a reviewer for this journal the new Editor asked my to come on board as an Associate Editor in 2014, and I spent 8 years in this role. My role was to , select suitable peer reviewers for new articles submitted to the journal, approach them and then follow-up until reviews were submitted. I then made decisions of whether articles could be accepted or not, or whether further review was required.

Visiting Professor
Universiti Tun Hussain Onn Malaysia (UTHM)
This honorary role involved attending and giving occasional talks at UTM, advising on syllabus, assisting the university in gaining recognition from external quality bodies, assisting in research and supervision and assisting in collaboration with Massey University.

Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia (UiTM)
This honorary role involved reviewing the operations management curriculum at UiTM, and evaluating samples of student research projects and theses. I also gave guest lectures and was guest of honour at best continuous improvement practice award day.

External Thesis Examining and promotion application reviewing
While an academic at Massey University, I received many (approx. 20) invitations to examine doctoral theses, and to review the portfolios of academics seeking promotions. The list of institutions I have examined and reviewed for is as follows: ​
